Guttling Hook:

Type: Physical Push
Range: 400/600/800/1000
Radius: 96
Mana Cost: 140
Cooldown: 14

Deals 100/200/300/400 Physical Damage to target and interrupts channeling spells. Drags the target to self.

This is the Devourer's main/funnest move. If you played Pudge a lot before, then you will find it only slightly different to aim and hook them. If you haven't then it will take a lot of practice to perfect it. Notice that it interrupts channeling spells. That is something that most Pudge players don't know because it didn't do that in DotA.

Decay:

Radius 250

Applies decay to nearby enemies targets and deals 25/50/75/100 Magical Damage to self.

Decay Affects:

20% slow and 25/50/75/100 Magical Damage.

This move is not that great by itself, but because of its combo capabilites, its amazing. Keep in mind that its MAGICAL damage. So enemies actually only take about 75 damage from it because of 25% base magic resistance.

Cadaver Armor:

Passive Bonuses
+1/2/3/4 Magic Armor

Though this move is fabulous later, its potential early is pretty high, but unfortunately, The Devourer needs his other 2 skills fully leveled up for him to be any threat. Note: Stacks with Shamans Headdress.

Devour:

Type: Magic
Range: 160

Channeling Time: 3 seconds
Mana Cost: 100/130/170
Cooldown: 30 seconds

Devour Affects:

Silenced
Perplexed ?!?!?
Disarmed
Immobilized
75/125/175 Magical Damage a sec.

The Devourer: Hes big, ugly and maybe seems boring and shallow to play, but once you divulge yourself into this guy, you'll find many options and pathways and things to perfect that make him a blast to play.

The Devourer plays the role of a early game ganker, transforms into a late game tanker. His Cadaver Armor really allows him to tank later. While early the hook, decay and devour combo is an easy gank. Mid game is his worst time, because heroes can just tank the damage and then stun and kill him. And hes really not that much of a help to the team tanking.

My Guide to How to Hook!

Now the most important part of learning how to hook is being able to judge how longe it takes for your hook to get where you want it to, and how long it takes for your target to hit that spot. Heres a pic of what i'm trying to say.

Where I like to hook.

This spot is good for 2 reasons. 1st, its useable from sent or hellbourne. 2nd It traps the heroes in the trees, allowing you to decay them for the last small amount of hp. Unfortunately, it takes tangoes to get there. I arrowed where I eat the tangoes to get there.

Early Game Strategy:

Early game is the most important time for The Devourer. This is when he is most effective, and if he doesn't do well here, his late game potential is even worse. One thing really important to realize with The Devourer, is that he has a lot of Fear Factor. Which means that the enemy in the lane will be scared of your combo(if there smart). If they are not, then just walk up to them, ult them, decay, then hook for the kill.

Make them fear you. This is very important because it allows you to leave your lane to gank mid or another lane, and have them wondering if your going to run back behind them and snipe them off. Try to gank as much as possible with The Devourer its what makes him annoying early, and even better late game.

This Fear Factor can only be used to your good if you have enough mana/hp to pull off your spells. With pudge, its important to keep up your hp and mana to enough to take down the weak caster heroes, I have found that this is about ¾ HP and 240 (until lvl 11) mana. I like to buy bottle early to really take my ganking potential to the next lvl. If you are out of charges in your bottle and don't want to try and find a rune, just go home, you have much more Fear Factor and killing power when full hp and mana.

Who to gank and when. I try to gank the weakest hero on the opponent's team. Its usually a Moon Queen. Defiler(sometimes early), maybe Thunderbringer. Its normally either a early caster, or a high agi gank hero (without invis/blink). I like to gank at about lvl 7, maybe 5 if your team says mid or another lane is being really stupid and can easily be ganked. One thing with The devourer is this, know your limits, if you go into a gank, with lvl 4 hook and 2 decay. They might be strong enough to withstand it, then kick the crap out of you or have a ally help them.

Starting Items:

2 Gauntlets of Strength
2 Iron Wood Branches
6 Tangoes.

I have seen people go straight bottle, and I have tried this myself, I just find it more useful to get some early health/regen to stay out there. But I do highly recommend getting bottle asap. There are a lot of other items that are useful to pudge early, this I have to decide depending on who I am playing against. If its a lot of PHYSICAL damage, then I might get a vanguard pretty early. I find its useful to get a Shaman's Headdress no matter who you're up against because it boosts your magic resistance to 50%, making decay do much less damage to you. Another reason I like to get Shamman's Heddress, is because you don't have to go home to get it, its all in the top and bottom shop.

Spells:

lvl 1: Decay
lvl 2: Guttling Hook
lvl 3: Guttling Hook
lvl 4: Decay
lvl 5: Guttling Hook
lvl 6: Devour
lvl 7: Guttling Hook
lvl 8: Decay
lvl 9: Decay
lvl 10: Cadaver Armor
lvl 11: Devour
lvl 12: Cadaver Armor
lvl 13: Cadaver Armor
lvl 14: Cadaver Armor
lvl 15: Stats
lvl 16: Devour
lvl 17-25:Stats

Mid Game Strategy:

This is the hardest part of the game for pudge to be useful, the enemies are getting to buff and powerful to gank and kill, but your not tank enough yet from Cadaver Armor to do any real tanking. What I do normally throughout these times is just farm, I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but I think its the most affective, try to get a heart, or maybe a bloodstone. Now i am not saying to just sit in a lane and just farm, but just don't run around trying to gank and getting even more behind in items. I think its most necessary to get items in this time then to run around.

Late Game Strategy:

Tank, Tank, Tank and Tank some more. You should have a lot of hp at this time, just run in there, and take the damage for your team. One thing I have done later that is really nice, is if your team is looking to win the battle, then try to run to where you think they will try to fall back to (ex, there tower, or farther down the lane) then try to hook off the stragglers so you or your team can take them out.

Items:

Behemoth's Heart:
This gives you a lot more regen and hp, making you take almost no damage from rot.

Post Haste:
Part of The Devourer's power is in his chasing/ganking, this really makes it easier to do that.

Bracers:
These explain themselves.

Bottle:
Allows you to stay in the lane longer, and pick up runes to gank easier.

Sacrificial Heart(bloodstone)
Now there has been a lot of controversy about wether this item is worth it to get, imho, I think it is if you get it early. If I find myself with a lot money before hood and bottle, then I get this instead, but my natural strategy is to not.

Shaman's Heddress
I believe that this item is almost neccasary for The Devourer to be affect at all. This boosts his Magic Resistance to 49ish percent, making him take alot less damage with Decay. Another reason is that the +8 hp a sec regen is CRUCIAL for being able to last hit creeps with Decay. I only dont get this item if I decide to get blood stone as my first item.
