HON: Legionaire
Legionnaire is a direct port of DotA's Axe, exactly the same except for one major nerf (he has no beard).
Legionnaire is often a pitfall hero for new players who don't understand what type of hero he is based upon his skillset. Lego is not a warrior, Lego is not a "tank," Lego is an initiating AoE disabler, just like most important STR heroes.
The first skill you want to max his is call, Taunt. The greater duration you get from Taunt is far more important than anything you could get from any other skill. This is his primary skill, and it is what makes Legionnaire an important hero in your team lineup. Taunt forces all the enemies and creeps in the vicinity to attack you, which will hopefully trigger your whirling blade skill, however it is the disable that is important, not getting whirling blade to proc. When you disable as much of the enemy team with your call as you can your team is now allowed to move in and begin getting their spell combos off.

His second skill you want to max is Whirling Blade . This is an effective laning harassment tool which helps you creep freely in a melee lane, a jungling tool, and is his primary source of damage. Note that right clicking on the enemy hero will draw enemy creep aggro, which will cause your whirl to begin proccing.
Always get your ult. Hold off on getting Terrify until later. This skill is useful in certain situations, such as team battles where people aren't fighting creeps or when someone is running away into their own territory, but Axe does not have the mana pool to support it along with Call early on, and so for most of the game you will not be wanting this skill, you will want stats instead.
His skill build:
Whirl/Call/Call/Whirl/Call/Decap/Call/Whirl/Whirl then stats until 14 or 15 then start getting Terrify.
Now, his item build.
At the beginning of the game you can buy several healing items of your choice (I prefer potions over blights, but it doesn't matter) and a handful of stat items. You want either gauntlets or marks of the novice (Lego starts with high health but a very small mana pool). You can also buy an iron buckler, or hold off and buy it in the lane. This generally depends on whether you wish you jungle Axe from level 1, or stay in the lane and buy it there.
The boots you want to aim for are Enhanced Marchers. EMarchers are an excellent choice on Axe because of the armor, the superior speed, the speed boost, and the phase which allows him to position himself much more easily. Steamboots are not a good choice because Lego is not a DPS hero, positioning through phase and armor are far more important to him.
You also want to buy a bottle.
Your first major item, which can be constructed completely in the lane, is Shaman's Headdress. This is your primary defensive item. Lego does not fear physical attacks, during his call he gets a large amount of bonus armor. He does, however, fear nukes. Shaman's Headdress also gives very high HP regeneration.
Your second major item will be Portal Key. This is Lego's vital item. He MUST have a Portal Key if he is to perform his role.
So, your core items:
Homecoming Stones
Iron Bucker (sell when midgame comes around, it isn't worth the taken item slot)
Bottle
Enhanced Marchers
Shaman's Headdress
Portal Key*
*Vital. If you have to delay any other items to get this, feel free to do so.
Your luxury items can be whatever you want. Legionnaire is a good farmer because of his whirl, however in general you will want to let your teammates take the farm.
I've found that a Glow Stone (Point Booster) is a good choice for boosting his mana pool while still helping his health. It's cheap, as well.
If you think the game will last longer than that, you typically want to aim for a Totem of Kuldra (Guinsoo). You will normally not finish it. As Legionnaire, buffing your attack speed or damage is a waste of time. Getting a disable will help your team much more, especially if the game gets this late.
You can omit the Totem of Kuldra for money to buy back if you die.
Barbed Armor is a bad idea.
Barbed Armor returns 100% of the damage inflicted upon you. This sounds like a good idea on Axe until you realize that his call gives him a huge amount of extra armor. The armor from the barbed armor, from enhanced marchers, and from call will all make the damage you take negligible, meaning your barbed armor does nothing.
So, how do you play Axe/Lego?
Your role during ganking, midgame, and lategame is the same. You use Portal Key to blink into a group of enemies, then you Taunt them. Your team proceeds to focus them down.
Do NOT use your ult to killsteal someone who is guaranteed to die during ganks. It's a waste of mana, it's a waste of your cooldown, and Axe does not need to get fed. Use it in team fights to quickly knock enemy heroes out of the fight so your team can focus others.
Early game Legionnaire is more difficult. There are several tricks you can use, depending on your lane. First of all, Lego can jungle if he has a buckler. You go into the woods, kill a few creep camps.
When the enemy tower gets low on health and you want to prevent the enemy from denying it, or keep the enemy creeps from pushing the lane back, you can run out ahead and tank the oncoming creeps, keeping them out of range of the tower. This means your own creeps will focus the tower, allowing your lanemate to attack it freely while the creeps take the damage.
Do not try this strategy, it will get you 5 man ganked:
Buy 2 iron bucklers and a set of tangos, go to the middle of the enemy's side of the long lane, and try to prevent the enemies from getting to the tower at level 1. Every time I see someone try this with Axe I laugh to myself, especially if I'm playing Lion or Rhasta or vengeful Spirit. |
